Perfect team player

The new Cat 990K wheel loader offers more power and increased payload for greater productivity, but with no increase in fuel consumption. On top of that, it features a redesigned cab with a generously sized interior in which the driver finds a quiet, comfortable workplace with ergonomic controls. With other detail changes, safety could be improved both for the driver as well as for the maintenance team. Designed as a loader to partner the Cat 773, 775 and 777 (capacity 54-91 t) construction and mining trucks, the diesel engine can be configured to meet the different needs of customers all over the world.

The 990K is an advanced update of the 990H. Compared to the H series of wheel loaders, however, the 990K ups the payload to 16 instead of 15 t (Fig.). This makes it a perfect team partner for the Cat 775 truck, the body of which can be filled after just four loading cycles. A key factor in this productive loading and transport system are the new Performance Series buckets, as they enable maximum filling levels in each loading pass. The capacity of the buckets ranges from 8.6-10 m³.

In the 990K, the Cat Acert C27 diesel engine delivers 11 % more power than before. 521 kW effect a noticeable boost in productivity without driving up fuel consumption. The better utilization of the fuel is down to the lower engine speeds and the Eco mode with on-demand throttle as well as an engine-idle shutdown system and an engine-idle kickdown/auto-resume system.

The field-proven Cat impeller clutch torque converter uses a lock-up clutch, providing direct drive to boost fuel economy, trim cycle times, and reduce heat, especially in load-and-carry applications. The system allows operators to balance rimpull and hydraulic power for optimum loading efficiency. Positive Flow Control hydraulics use a variable displacement, electronically controlled pump to precisely apportion oil flow based on operator control inputs.

In the cab too, the driver finds numerous improvements. The low in-cab noise level of 69.9 dB(A) and the comfortable ergonomically designed Cat seat with integrated seat-mounted controls provides more comfort for the driver. A practical steering and transmission control lever simplifies manoeuvring of the wheel loader and at the same time permits uncomplicated gear switching.

The 990K is equipped with the Cat Vision rear-view camera system and in-cab display to show the operator the area behind the loader. The optional Cat Detect object detection system builds on the camera system with radars and in-cab software that notify the operator when an object is detected within the radar coverage area. The two systems are designed to enhance work safety.

For added safety, a remote panel houses a stairway light switch, engine shutdown switch, and lockouts for the transmission and engine starter. A second panel provides convenient access to the battery disconnect switch and a jump-start receptacle. Routine maintenance points are easily accessed, including hydraulic pressure taps and oil sampling ports. The optional ground level service centre reduces service time. It displays fluid level status, houses drain-and-fill ports and provides a data port for diagnostic work.

A number of additional options are available to tailor the loader for specific applications and sites. For example, the optional high lift linkage enables the 990K to load Cat 777 trucks. The integrated axle cooling package and ride control options are particularly beneficial in load-and-carry work.
