The symposium will be held at the Fraunhofer ICT in Pfinztal near Karlsruhe from May 9 to 10, 2019 under the direction of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ulrich Teipel, Nuremberg, University of Technology and Fraunhofer ICT, and Rainer Schweppe, Environmental Engineering, Fraunhofer Institute for Chemicals Technology ICT. The symposium will take place under the patronage of Franz Untersteller, member of the State Parliament, Ministry of Environment, Climate and Energy, Baden-Württemberg.
At the symposium, measures for improving resource efficiency, branch- and material-dependent strategies and technologies are to be presented and discussed. In addition to raw materials for the iron and steel production and non-ferrous metals, especially the industrial minerals potash and rock salts as well as stones and soils are focal points. The focus is on measures to secure raw materials, recycling and secondary raw materials, new treatment technologies and environmental protection measures. The symposium will in particular contribute to scientific-technical transfer on the topic of raw material efficiency and resource optimization and bring together professionals from industry, politics and society, from research and development as well as applications relative to the “raw materials”. It will provide a communication and discussion platform for partners from a wide range of raw material sectors. Moreover, technology trends as well as introduced technologies, possibilities for obtaining aid and support, and economic prospects for innovative products and processes will be presented and discussed.

The editor-in-chief of AT MINERAL PROCESSING, Dr. Petra Strunk, had the opportunity to speak with Prof. Ulrich Teipel about the main topics and the highlights of the forthcoming symposium.
Prof. Ulrich Teipel: In contrast to other meetings and conferences, the young scientists are in the foreground here.They will present their doctoral theses or report on their research projects. We are less concerned with political issues or reports concering primary raw materials, but, of course, the lectures are nevertheless aimed at practical relevance and feasibility. In order not to establish an excessively high barrier, the conference language will be German.
Prof. Ulrich Teipel: No, we address all people active in the secondary raw materials sector – industry experts, scientists and employees from public authorities. The exchange between the participants is very important. And there will be ample opportunity for exchange: in the breaks and at the evening event.
Prof. Ulrich Teipel: I am thinking of lectures regarding CFRP material, of lectures on topics such as the recycling of vanadium or gypsum, on new developments in the field of sorting as well as on issues of the recycling of power plant or steel dusts. And of course, we will have a series of reviews on resource efficiency again – what is the state of the art, what are the positive and negative developments?
Prof. Ulrich Teipel: I think so, however, now I am talking about the secondary raw materials sector, in particular. Many raw materials, for which we lack the primary source, come to us. These substances can only be recycled. Thanks to recycling and clever product design, they can be turned into new, high-quality items – that’s really innovative!
Prof. Ulrich Teipel: In any case, the diversity of materials has increased. Cell phones, photovoltaics, electronic waste - they were hardly an issue 20 years ago – or the variety of CFRP materials used in the automotive or in the aircraft industry.The landfill issue has changed fundamentally. To some extent, we are still at the beginning with the reprocessing of certain materials.These are future-oriented topics for the secondary raw material economy.
