The EU’s “FAME” project aim is for innovative preparation technologies

Domestic European resources

Summary: The renaissance of European mining is dependent not only on strategic economic policy, but also on the competitiveness of the technological base. Innovative research projects with high industrial participation and great practical applicability make a significant contribution to increasing assuredness of supply and industrial growth in Europe and the world as a whole. The FAME project examined here outlines roads to technical improvement and raised efficiency in the recovery and preparation of complex low-grade ore deposits, which make up no small part of Europe’s reserves of tin, tungsten and other important minor constituents.

In past centuries, Europe’s mining industry has at all times been a source of innovation throughout the resources industry value chain. Many important inventions originated from the then flourishing mining regions. Since the 1970s, Europe has, however, witnessed a massive decline in the mining of spars and ores. The equipment-supply industry became globalised, and London evolved into the international hub of mining finance, but mineral processing, in particular, fell behind global standards. The growing influence of social acceptance debates and rising competitive pressure in an ever more...
