Mining industry in Latin America

Summary: Latin America is again attracting the attention of the international mining industry. Gigantic investments are currently being made in Brazil, Chile, Peru and Mexico. This article considers the background to this development and presents the most important commodities, countries, companies and investments.

1 Introduction

International conferences often provide a good impression of the current mood in specific industries. However, recent events relating to the mining industry in Latin America presented a contrasting picture. On the one hand, there was the Latin America Mining Summit (LatAmin 2013), held on 1st and 2nd July in Lima/Peru with presentations, for example, on the challenges facing the Chilean mining industry [1].
