Resand enters the South African market
14.07.2026Resand, a Finnish technology company specializing in environmentally friendly foundry sand reclamation, has signed an agreement with Lauds Projects and Procurement Ltd, marking the company’s entry into the South African market. The agreement will simultaneously serve as Resand’s thermal-mechanical reclamation technology launch for chromite sand reclamation.
The agreement was signed on 25 June 2026 and will enter into force in the second quarter of 2027, running for a period of seven years. Under the agreement, Resand will supply Lauds with a Gas Reclaimer for the thermal-mechanical reclamation of chromite foundry sand.
South Africa is the world’s largest producer of foundry-grade chromite sand, making it a natural entry point for Resand’s expansion. In addition to meeting its own reclamation needs, Lauds plans to offer reclamation services to other chromite sand foundries in the surrounding area, providing benefits across the local foundry sector with the applied unique technology.
“Entering South Africa with Lauds marks the launch of a unique solution for chromite sand reclamation, and it’s a launchpad for further expansion into other markets,” said Mikko Immonen, CEO, at Resand. “Chromite sand is valued in foundries, especially for steel, for the strong chilling effect from its high thermal conductivity and density, its low thermal expansion, and its resistance to metal penetration. Resand's patented twin-drum technology provides a solution, enabling foundries to reclaim and reuse chromite sand rather than relying solely on virgin sand."
Benefits for Lauds and the wider foundry sector
For Lauds, the partnership is expected to deliver clear cost savings through reduced reliance on virgin chromite sand, alongside meaningful ESG improvements that support the company’s environmental and sustainability targets.
“We chose Resand because their technology is genuinely innovative — there has simply not been a reliable thermal solution for chromite sand reclamation until now,” said Kevin van Niekerk, CEO of Lauds Projects and Procurement. “Beyond the clear cost savings this brings to our operations, it allows us to significantly reduce our environmental footprint and offer the same benefit to other foundries in our region. This partnership is an important step for the sustainability of the South African foundry industry.”
A strategic milestone for Resand
Sand reclamation remains a relatively new field within the foundry industry, and South Africa’s position as the world’s leading producer of high-quality chromite sand makes it a key strategic market. The partnership with Lauds gives Resand a strong foothold in the region and a platform to expand its chromite sand reclamation business to other foundries and markets going forward.
