Symposium on extraction and processing of fluorspar

On 20 June 2014, the symposium “Innovative extraction and processing technology for fluorspar with reference to the Schoenbrunn and Boesenbrunn deposit” will be held in Freiberg. Focus of the programme at this scientific conference will be the presentation and discussion of new technologies for cost-efficient and environmental extraction of fluorspar. The event is aimed at professionals from industry and science. All those interested are welcome to attend.

Background to the conference is the potential resumption of raw materials extraction at the fluorspar deposit Schoenbrunn and Boesenbrunn in the Vogtland region of Saxony, which in view of current developments on the global market seems viable again. The deposit was worked with interruptions from 1868 to the year 1991. Against the background of the increased global demand for fluorite and rising raw materials prices, the Free State of Saxony, which owns the deposit, intends to reopen it as it still holds sufficient reserves.

Due to the economic and geological situation, the development of fluorspar deposits in Germany cannot, however, be expected that often in the next few years. For this reason, the setting up of a new mining operation presents an opportunity to apply the latest findings in mining and mineral processing technology first to ensure economic and sustainable operation at the deposit and second to open up the possibility of using the facility as a reference worldwide.

At the symposium on 20 June 2014, there will be opportunity to meet representatives of the Sächsisches Immobilien- und Baumanagement (SIB), the public enterprise responsible for the sale of mining rights at the deposit.

The event is taking place on Friday, 20 June 2014, 9.00 am, in lecture hall WEI-1051 (Lampadiusstrasse 4, 09599 Freiberg). The event is organized by the Institute of Mineral Processing Machines at Freiberg University of Mining and Technology and Saxony’s State Ministry of Finance.
