Slag processing for German steelworks

SBM Mineral Processing, a plant engineering company headquartered in Upper Austria, has completed its biggest order to date: a slag processing plant for the German steelworks Dillinger Hüttenwerke, worth € 10.3 mill. The order comprised key plant components, such as crushers, screens, belt conveyors and vibrating feeders as well as magnetic separators. SBM supplies everything from one source and therefore took responsibility for planning, design, engineering, delivery and installation. In addition SBM undertook commissioning and subsequent trial operation including documentation and training of the employees.

The plant is fed with 400 t/h LD slag. As the slag comes from a wide range of sources, the feed size varies widely. Dumper trucks are used to dump the material on to a grizzly, the material is then preclassified with a grapple and fed into the feed bins or – via a crusher – into the plant. In the plant itself, the iron or steel is removed, while the remaining dead material is crushed and screened. 17 different grades or products are produced, which are stored in bays under the screening plant.
