Effective dust suppression

Dust is not only troublesome, but also a health hazard. For this reason, there are legal guidelines in most of the countries stipulating a reduction of dust emissions.

However, how can dust be reduced effectively?

It is known that water is basically suitable for reduction of dust emissions, and this can be observed at typical emission sources after any rain shower. Contrary to rain or sprinkler systems, which soak the material and mostly are also silting it so as to avoid dust, it is possible to bind as much dust as possible by means of water spraying systems using as little water as possible. This is also an essential advantage of these systems, i.e. they only bind the dust and do not silt the material.

However, the effectiveness of dust binding using water depends on many factors. In addition to the inclination of the material to dust formation, the plant-specific conditions, such as the conveying speed, the height of fall and also the environmental conditions have an essential influence on the effectiveness of a dust binding system.

Consequently,  designing a water spraying plant for dust binding requires more than the installation of a few nozzles somewhere. The know-how of the suppliers of such solutions plays an important role as regards the later effectiveness of the spraying system.

Since 1975 VSR Industrietechnik GmbH, Germany, has been offering reliable and cost-effective solutions concerning the topic of bulk solids handling. The product group DUSTEX®, as a solution of dust abatement, was added in the mid-1980s. Since that time the DUSTEX® dispersion and water spraying systems have proved a success in practice worldwide as regards dust abatement.

In addition to the actual dust abatement systems, VSR also offers the engineering for encapsulations and air baffles, which can increase the effectiveness of the spraying systems even more by leading the dust-laden air to the spraying system in a controlled way and by damming up its spread.

If requested, VSR also supplies turnkey systems from engineering up to commissioning, i.e. from belt transfer points up to complete handling systems for bulk solids from vessel unloading and belt transfer points up to sprinkler irrigation of piles.

Since the requirements of each customer are as individual as the bulk solids he handles, it is important to tailor the approach regarding dust binding to the specific problem of the customer.

To solve this problem and to be able to offer optimum approaches regarding dust binding to any customer, VSR has various systems that make it possible to offer them tailored to the requirement even as a combined solution.

The DUSTEX® dispersion system operates with water and compressed air. The two-substance nozzles including resonance head developed by VSR itself are the core where the water is dispersed finely by means of compressed air. The droplet range of the two-substance nozzles varies between 10 and 50 µm depending on the pressure. VSR offers three types of nozzles for a water throughput of 10 l/h up to 185 l/h per nozzle. Thus, it is possible to disperse finely even later essentially more or even less water by means of a simple nozzle replacement.

The DUSTEX® dispersion system will always be used if it is necessary to avoid moisture penetration into the material, i.e. only suspended dust is to be bound if water has to be used economically or if very low emission values have to be met.

The DUSTEX® water spraying system is operated with water only. The water is finely dispersed with an operating pressure of up to 16 bar. The droplet range varies between 50 and 150 µm depending on the type of nozzle and the operating pressure. Amongst other things, it is used if plants cannot be encapsulated, if a slightly higher amount of water is tolerated or if the material moisture should be increased in a carefully controlled way.

The DUSTEX® Fog blower is the latest product of the DUSTEX® group. It is operated like the DUSTEX® water spraying system, however, with a water pressure of 16 bar. It offers maximum flexibility due to its variable usability. It is always used where it is required to adapt to changing plant conditions or if dust has to be bound in larger areas or if material must be kept wet on changing piles. DUSTEX® sprinkler systems complete the range of products concerning the topic of dust abatement. These simple systems represent a possibility to minimize diffuse dust emissions as they occur, for example, due to the in-house conveying.
