DSIV: Innovation Summit & Exhibition at Essen

T‌his was the motto under which the DSIV, the German Bulk Solids Industry Association (Deutsche Schüttgut-Industrie Verband e.V.), invited companies active in the field of bulk solids as well as interested experts to its congress on 12 April 2018. In the evening of April 11th, the participants met to visit the Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex. From 1851 to 1986, the Unesco World Heritage was an active hard coal mine, which was the last of 291 coal mines to be closed down, while the coking plant still worked until 1993. Today, it is a gigantic museum, which captivates mainly with the abundance of the machines for coal treatment still to be admired in their original state. An example for this is the coal washing area, where the coal was divided into different qualities and separated from waste rock. A gangway with a length of 55 m leads the visitors to a height of 24 m, where the coal washing area can be accessed through the Visitors Center Zollverein. It is not without reason that this ensemble, consisting of 20 individual buildings, belongs to the most important cultural assets of the world, which, in its time, also set architectural standards. Then, having learned numerous facts and gained a lot of impressions, the participants had the opportunity to refresh themselves and change views in the Café & Restaurant “die kokerei” (“The Coking Oven”).

The following day, the lecture program started with the presentation of altogether 11 lectures on all topics regarding the handling and transport of bulk solids. The lecture day was opened with the official welcome by Jochen Baumgartner, Managing Director of the DSIV, and Stefan Penno, Chairman of the association. Penno emphasized that it was important for Germany to maintain their lead by unbureaucratic cooperation. However, he also pointed out that the rest of the world was also “wide awake”.

Ricardo Wehrbein started the lecture series with the presentation of   “Safety and efficiency in pneumatic conveyance – no contradiction in itself.” In his lecture, he draw the attention, above all, to the fact that with regard to ATEX, no compromise should be made and no risk be taken. Concerning pneumatic conveyance, an alignment of volume flow and pressure range is of importance. To ensure a clean process, attention should be paid above all to oil-free compression. He emphasized that maintenance time and downtimes could be reduced by predictive maintenance.

In his lecture entitled “Advantages and disadvantages of modern industrial weighing technology in comparison to traditional level measurement technology”, Roger Faust from the Flintec GmbH addressed the intricacies of weighing technology. Tank scales or vessel weighing represents a very precise, reliable measuring method to determine the filling level of containers. Furthermore, it is characterized by high reliability and low maintenance work.

In the following lecture, a paper by Fritz W. Winterseller and Prof. Layrer from the University of Aalen was presented on the wear behavior of glass sheets – the presentation was entitled “Extremely stable and clean solution for abrasive bulk solids in pneumatic conveying systems”. The focus of this two-year project was on statements in respect of useful life, comparison with wear behavior of competitive products, such as stainless steel or other types of glass, parameters of product development as well as the development of reproducible measuring methods at reduced test duration.

Stefan Penno from REMBE® GmbH Safety + Control and President of the IND EX® (INTERCONTINENTAL ASSOCIATION OF EXPERTS FOR INDUSTRIAL EXPLOSION PROTECTION e.V.) gave an impressive demonstration of experiences and further developments made since the foundation of the company in 1973. Based on spectacular photos, he illustrated what really matters, above all, during pressure release with very high pressures building up within milliseconds. In his lecture, he introduced the “4th generation of flameless pressure release” – in particular the 100 % contour-parallel pressure release (CPV).

Following a coffee break which provided time for professional exchange, the following lectures dealt with sample analysis, sampling and material handling. In his presentation “Moisture measurement – practice- and future-oriented” by Franz Ludwig, Gesellschaft für Mess- und Regeltechnik mbH, Klaus Kliemt addressed the advantages of microwave measurement - the contactless measuring method by means of probes can be applied for the determination of moisture. The sensors may also contain an analysis software so that measuring results can immediately be displayed on a mobile terminal via app.

The handling of toxic substances requires particular precautionary measures. In his lecture “Industrial sampling in difficult environments”, Alexander Kemmling (Rembe Kersting GmbH) discussed the reduction of the leakage risk, in particular during sampling. He presented special containment samplers which ensure that material cannot leak out during sampling and moreover guarantee high reproducibility during sampling.

The presentation “Use of ceramics in rotary feeders” held by Mario Dikty (Kreisel GmbH & Co. KG) dealt with the feeding of e.g. fine material to pneumatic conveying systems. The rotary feeders work energy-efficiently while showing high wear resistance with little space required.

A new sealing system for screw conveyors developed by the SHA GmbH in cooperation with the company CinchSeal was introduced by Tom Henning (SHA GmbH). It works without lubricants, thus contamination of product or environment can be excluded. The sealing has been available on the market for more than two years.

Michael Brocks (FLSmidth Hamburg GmbH) provided an overview of the most common pneumatic conveying systems in his presentation entitled “Efficient pneumatic conveyance with high transport capacity of more than 100 t/h and covering several 100 m”. In this context, he discussed the characteristics of the various conveyor tracks according to their material load.

The production of wood pellets from wood chips is a low-cost and efficient way to heat supply. However, the handling of highly flammable materials during the manufacturing process requires sophisticated fire and explosion protection for each individual section during production, such as transport, grinding, pelletizing, filling etc. What should be considered, Mathias Fischer and Henning Schrader presented in their contribution “Pelleting - great technology with risks”.

The lecture “Screening and screening machines” addressed questions such as “Which classification plant is the right one for my application?” or “How can I make my classification process more efficient?”. In addition, in September the DSIV will visit its member company Rhewum – there is the opportunity to take a look behind the scenes and to attend exciting lectures on the subject of classification.

During the breaks as well as after the lecture program the participants had time for technical discussions and contact maintenance. Promoting networking among the experts in the bulk solids industry is one of the declared goals of the DSIV, the organizer of this varied and highly interesting event.
